Modern Indian Restaurant in Melbourne, One Block from Flinders Lane
Modern Indian Fine Dining at 72 Flinders Street
Elchi is a modern Indian restaurant at 72 Flinders Street, Melbourne CBD, one block south of Flinders Lane and steps from Flinders Street Station. Chef Manpreet Sekhon, Melbourne's Curry Queen, cooks Indian food with classic technique and a modern hand, served in the former Herald and Weekly Times building under the gold ceiling that has stopped first-time guests in their tracks since 2022.
If you know the Flinders Lane dining precinct, Elchi is the short walk south you have not taken yet. Book a table or walk in, Tuesday to Sunday.
What Modern Indian Means at Elchi
The menu goes far beyond butter chicken. Start with golgappa shots filled with spiced tequila and avocado, freshly shucked oysters with grilled garlic, curry leaf and chilli, and tandoori chicken dumplings in curry brodo. From the tandoor come lamb chops, paneer tikka and a chicken tikka with tomato-chilli caramel. Signatures include Indori chaap, Hyderabadi goat curry and lamb martbaan, and dessert ends with an Old Monk affogato.
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are marked on every menu. See the full menu.
A Wine List Built for Indian Food
Elchi's wine list runs from Victorian Riesling and Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir to Sancerre, Mosel Riesling, Burgundy and Laurent-Perrier Champagne, chosen to stand up to spice. Indian-inspired cocktails include the Maharani, the Pink City and the Elchi Espresso Martini. See the wine list.
